SUMMARY:Feast of St. John the Baptist
DESCRIPTION:The feast of Saint John the Baptist on Chalki is celebrated with particular reverence and deep spirituality on August 28 and 29\, the eve and the day of the Beheading of the Saint. On the island\, at the historic monastery of Saint John\, crowds of the faithful flock to participate in the Divine Liturgy in honor of the ascetic prophet and forerunner of Christ. Saint John “Alarga” is the most important place of worship on Chalki. It is located inland\, “alarca\,” meaning “far away” in the local dialect of Chalki. It was most likely built before 1835 by Ioannis Hatzispathas. It is said that during the Ottoman occupation\, it functioned as a men’s monastery. This is supported by the existence of two corresponding building complexes to the north and south of the church. Today\, these serve the needs of the monastery and house the family currently overseeing and maintaining it. On the occasion of the feast\, all the local and expatriate Chalkians gather\, while in earlier\, more nostalgic times\, the Monastery was flooded with the island’s sponge divers\, who had returned after a dangerous and arduous working season. \nOn the eve of the feast (August 28)\, following Vespers\, the Monastery will host a festive meal for all attendees\, followed by a traditional celebration featuring traditional instruments and local dances. On the main day of the feast (August 29)\, the Divine Liturgy will be celebrated\, presided over by the Metropolitan of Symi\, Tilos\, Chalki\, and Kastelorizo\, and afterward the icon of the Saint is carried in a procession to the port\, accompanied by the Rhodes Municipal Philharmonic Orchestra (Conductor: Michalis Hatzipetros)\, where it remains in the Church of Saint Nicholas. This is followed by the traditional celebration at the island’s port. The festival is not only a religious event but also a living expression of the history\, faith\, and unity of the people of Chalki\, who keep the flame of tradition alive. The musical part of the celebration is led by Ilias Anastasiadis (lyre)\, Binis Zampetoulas (lute)\, Nikos Kanavakis (keyboards)\, and Giorgos Anastasiadis (lute).
