Nimborio

Nimborio, the main port and only residential settlement of the island of Halki, is widely regarded as one of the most important and picturesque towns in the Dodecanese. Nestled around a beautiful, horseshoe-shaped bay, the village presents a striking contrast between its vibrant, colorful architecture and the dramatic, barren hills that form its rugged backdrop. This setting creates one of the most beautiful neoclassical settlements in all of Greece, a scenic masterpiece where time seems to slow down. The village’s landscape is dramatically guarded by three old windmills and the remnants of a medieval castle, while the ancient capital, Chorio, lies quietly at the foot of the castle, whispering stories of a older era.

The architecture of Nimborio is its crowning glory. You will find elegant Venetian-style buildings, stately mansions, and charming white houses adorned with unique details, all lining a network of quaint, car-free alleyways. Currently, only around 250 to 300 local residents call Nimborio home, and they are famously known for their warm hospitality and friendly nature, making every visitor feel instantly at home.

As you wander through the alleys, you will discover some of the island’s more than 360 churches, but several landmarks stand out as absolute must-sees. The church of Agios Nikolaos, the Patron Saint and Protector of the island, was built in 1861 and features a magnificent bell tower whose base leans gracefully over an arch made of ancient marbles. Other notable landmarks include the Byzantine bell tower, the clock tower standing proudly before the Town Hall, and the historic building of Hiona Vouvali, once used for storing sponge supplies. The main square is the vibrant heart of the village, where you will find beautiful traditional tavernas, cozy cafés, and small shops selling everything from jewelry and sandals to ceramics and local sweets.

One of the greatest pleasures in Nimborio is simply sitting at a local café along the harbor. Here, you can enjoy a glass of ouzo, play a friendly game of tavli (backgammon), and savor traditional delicacies. Be sure to try the locally produced prickly pears and the famous makarounia (handmade pasta). And when the Aegean sun becomes too warm, you need not look far for relief—simply climb down the steps from the harbor’s edge directly into the crystal-clear, inviting water for an unforgettable swim.
