Friendship & Tradition Festival (Maritsa, Rhodes, June 20–21, 2026)
Imagine an island where every visitor becomes a friend, and every melody tells a story of unity. The Friendship and Tradition Festival in Chalki is far more than a simple event; it is a vibrant, living celebration of culture, music, and the profound connections that bind communities together. This is your unique opportunity to encounter the soul of the places and people with whom the island of Chalki shares deep bonds of friendship and good neighborliness. For the fourth consecutive year, residents and visitors will gather not as strangers, but as a single, joyful company to share traditional sounds, spirited dances, and authentic flavors that beautifully bridge the wisdom of the past with the energy of the present. Against a backdrop of breathtaking scenery, traditional ensembles, virtuoso musicians, and graceful dancers will create a colorful, unforgettable mosaic of friendship and artistic creativity. This festival does not just showcase the richness of our cultural heritage; it actively highlights Chalki as an open, welcoming, and vibrantly alive island—a place where ancient tradition meets contemporary artistic expression in perfect harmony.
In 2026, this grand celebration welcomes a very special first guest: Maritsa, a village from Rhodes renowned for its long agricultural tradition, its sprawling olive trees, sun-drenched vineyards, and the famous festivals, especially that of Agia Paraskevi. The warm-hearted residents of Maritsa have kept their folk traditions incredibly alive, from carnival dances to traditional serenades, maintaining a powerful sense of local identity. But the connection is personal and historic. After the war, many families from Chalki found shelter, work, and a new home in Maritsa, primarily in agricultural jobs and small-scale crafts. This migration forged deep family ties, marriages, and a shared social life, turning Maritsa into a beloved “second village” for generations of Chalkians. The warm relationships and mutual support continue to this day, making this festival a true homecoming. Join us to witness this beautiful reunion, where you will be welcomed with open arms into a story of resilience, shared history, and joyous celebration.
Friendship & Tradition Festival (Rethymno, Crete, June 12–13, 2026)
Get ready for an extraordinary cultural journey as the 4th Friendship & Tradition Festival sails to the magnificent Prefecture of Rethymno in Crete for two nights of unparalleled musical and artistic magic. This is your chance to witness a spectacular meeting of two great island traditions in a setting of pure Aegean beauty. On June 12, the Municipality of Chalki proudly presents the legendary lyre player Grigoris Samolis, an artist who has built a devoted following throughout Greece and beyond. Born in a small village in Aimonas, Mylopotamos, in the heart of Rethymno, Grigoris began his musical journey at the astonishing age of just seven. By twelve, he had officially embarked on a career that would take the authentic, soul-stirring music of Crete to the world stage. His performance promises an evening of deep emotion and virtuosity, connecting you directly to the rugged, passionate heart of Cretan culture.
The following evening, June 13, the stage will be set alight by the acclaimed theater group of the Brotherhood of Cretans of Rhodes “Psiloritis,” who will present their stunning new artistic production. But the highlight of the night will be a magnificent gathering where the traditions of Crete and Chalki unite. Imagine the pride and joy as the Association of Chalkians of Rhodes “Ag. Ioannis,” the Chalki Cultural Association “To Myrtos,” and the “Psiloritis” Brotherhood come together to share their dances and songs. The air will vibrate with the sound of legendary musicians: Nikos Skoutelis on lyra, Michalis Kostakis on lyra, Binis Zampetoulas on laouto, and Nikos Kanavakis on keyboards. This is not just a concert; it is a grand celebration of shared roots, artistic excellence, and the unifying power of music and dance—an experience that will leave you with unforgettable memories and a profound love for the living traditions of the Greek islands.

Mandolin Festival (21-22.07.2026)
Prepare to be serenaded by the very soul of the Dodecanese as the Mandolin Festival returns to Chalki for its second enchanting year. The mandolin is far more than a simple instrument here; it is a symbol of deep cultural identity, its sweet and melodic tone having accompanied songs of love, stories of exile, and cries of joy at festivals, weddings, and local gatherings for generations. On Chalki, the mandolin holds a uniquely cherished place in the local musical tradition, and for two magical days, the Municipality of Chalki will honor this delicate instrument that once graced every celebration and friendly meeting on the island. Master musicians will bring the mandolin to center stage, proving that even today, its sound remains vibrantly alive, passing down from generation to generation an authentic island spirit that touches the heart.
The first event, on July 21, will transport you back in time as it takes place on the historic steps of the Church of Saint Nicholas—just as it used to happen, in the neighborhoods and at the local cafes. Feel the magic of a bygone era as the music fills the night air. On the second day, July 22, the celebration moves to the island’s picturesque port, where the gentle lapping of the waves will provide the perfect accompaniment to the mandolin’s tender voice. The festival will feature the prodigious Michalis Charkiolakis on mandolin, who began his musical studies at just seven years old, going on to master Cretan and Byzantine music, the lute, askomandoura, flute, and guitar. He will be joined by the equally gifted Giorgos Koudoumogiannakis on lyra, alongside the incredible talents of Vangelis Bagourakis (lute/vocals), Manolis Drimis (guitar), Kostas Pilidis (percussion), Binis Zampetoulas (lute), and Michalis Kostakis (lyre). This is a rare chance to witness a living musical heritage in an intimate, breathtakingly beautiful setting.
Feast of the Dormition of the Mother of God (14-15.08.2026)
Experience the “Easter of Summer”—a radiant and profound celebration of faith, tradition, and hope on the beautiful island of Chalki. The Feast of the Assumption is one of the most important events in the Orthodox Christian calendar, and in every corner of Greece, people honor the Virgin Mary, the supreme embodiment of love and compassion, with deep devotion, music, and dance. The Municipality of Chalki invites you to join residents and visitors for a two-day celebration that is both reverent and joyously festive. But this year, the celebration holds even greater significance and splendor because the historic church of Panagia Choriánis has been beautifully restored. This monumental project, carried out by the Dodecanese Ephorate of Antiquities, involved the expert conservation of priceless frescoes, the reinforcement of the load-bearing structure, the restoration of the magnificent wood-carved iconostasis, and the protection of the ancient stonework. This respectful restoration highlights the church’s immense historical and religious value, contributing brilliantly to the cultural revitalization of Chalki’s unique identity.
On Friday, August 14, after a three-year hiatus, the moving service will be held, followed by a traditional celebration in the church courtyard—a magical reunion of faith and community. Then, on Saturday, August 15, the festivities will flow joyfully down to the Port of Chalki, where the whole island becomes one big, welcoming family. The celebrated musicians Alexandros Peroulis (lyra), Michalis Kostakis (lyra), Binis Zampetoulas (lute), Nikos Kanavakis (keyboards), and the enchanting Theano Mitsou (vocals) will provide the soundtrack to an unforgettable night. This is more than a religious festival; it is a journey into the heart of Greek Orthodox tradition, a celebration of cultural preservation, and a warm invitation to share in the island’s deepest moments of joy and spiritual connection.
Feast of St. John the Baptist (28-29.08.2026)
Prepare for an unforgettable journey into the heart of Chalkian faith and history at the sacred feast of Saint John the Baptist. Celebrated with profound reverence and deep spirituality on August 28 and 29, this festival draws crowds of faithful to the historic monastery of Saint John “Alarga”—the most important place of worship on the island. The name “Alarga” comes from the local dialect, meaning “far away,” as the monastery is located inland, a peaceful, contemplative distance from the sea. Believed to have been built before 1835 by Ioannis Hatzispathas, it is said to have functioned as a men’s monastery during the Ottoman occupation, a fact supported by the two beautiful building complexes that now house the family dedicated to its care. For this feast, all local and expatriate Chalkians gather, evoking nostalgic times when the monastery would be flooded with the island’s sponge divers, returning home after a dangerous and arduous working season.
On the eve of the feast, August 28, following the moving Vespers service, the monastery courtyard will host a warm and festive meal for all attendees—a true act of philoxenia (hospitality). This will be followed by a traditional celebration filled with the sounds of local instruments and the steps of ancient dances. On the main day, August 29, the Divine Liturgy is celebrated, presided over by the Metropolitan of Symi, Tilos, Chalki, and Kastelorizo. Afterwards, the icon of the Saint is carried in a glorious procession to the port, accompanied by the magnificent Rhodes Municipal Philharmonic Orchestra, and remains in the Church of Saint Nicholas. The celebration then continues at the port with more music and dancing. This festival is a living expression of history, unshakable faith, and the beautiful unity of the Chalkian people, who keep the flame of tradition alive. The musical celebration is led by Ilias Anastasiadis (lyre), Binis Zampetoulas (lute), Nikos Kanavakis (keyboards), and Giorgos Anastasiadis (lute). Come and be part of this powerful, moving, and joyous event.
