Ftenagia Beach

Ftenagia is widely considered the second most popular beach on the island of Halki, following only the more famous Potamos. What it lacks in size, it more than compensates for with an authentic, unspoiled character that draws visitors back time and again. Tucked away on the island’s western coast, this beautiful cove is hidden behind the small chapel of Agia Aikaterini (also known as Agia Caterina). To find it, simply walk to the chapel and carefully descend the rocks from the back side — the beach will reveal itself below, a stunning reward for your short journey.

The beach itself is a mix of descriptions that together create a unique landscape: while some visitors speak of soft golden sand stretching for miles, the more common reality is a small, intimate cove composed of white shiny pebbles and rocky patches. Regardless of the surface underfoot, the water is unanimously praised as breathtaking. Expect crystal clear, turquoise waters that are so pure you can see every pebble on the seabed. As you swim or float in the warm Greek sun, you will find yourself surrounded by a dramatic backdrop of lush greenery and towering cliffs.

Reaching Ftenagia is part of the adventure. The beach is approximately a 15-minute walk from Nimborio via a well-marked trekking path. For those who prefer wheels, the beach is also accessible by car or bus via a road that passes under the old windmills (the road is not paved with asphalt, so a slow, careful drive is recommended). Additionally, you can reach Ftenagia by boat taxi, which also offers the chance to combine your trip with a beautiful tour around the island. Once you arrive, you will not be left to fend for yourself. A couple of family-run tavernas sit near the shoreline, serving delicious, freshly prepared food — including fresh seafood and local dishes — perfect for a long lunch after swimming. Several sunbeds and umbrellas are also available for rent, allowing you to relax in comfort.
